How to Name Columns in Google Sheets

Learn how to name columns in Google Sheets to improve organization and data clarity. Rename headers in just a few clicks using this quick guide.

1. Open your Google Sheets file
Launch Google Sheets and open the spreadsheet where you want to name or rename columns.

2. Select the top cell of the column
Click the first cell in the column (usually Row 1) where you want to insert a column name. This will serve as your column header.

3. Type your desired column name
Enter the new name directly into the selected cell, then press Enter.

4. Apply formatting for visibility (optional)
Highlight all header cells and use the toolbar to apply bold, center align, or a background color to distinguish them from other rows.

5. Freeze the header row (optional)
Go to the View menu, hover over Freeze, then select 1 row to keep the column names visible as you scroll.
