How to Do Ranked Choice Voting in Google Forms

How to set up a ranked choice voting poll or survey in Google Forms using multiple choice grids. Good for elections, polls, or group decision-making.

1. Start a new form
Go to forms.google.com and click on the Blank form. Give your form a title and description, then click the + button to add a new question.

2. Choose a question type
Click the current question type to open the dropdown menu of available formats.

3. Select "Multiple choice grid"
Choose the Multiple choice grid option to allow respondents to rank items in a structured table.

4. Add rows and columns
Click Add row to enter each row option, then click Add column to enter column choices. For this example, create a 5×5 grid.

5. Label each row and column
Give meaningful labels to all rows and columns to guide respondent choices.

6. Require a response for each row
Toggle the Require a response in each row setting beneath the grid options. Then click the three vertical dots (more options).

7. Limit to one response per column
Enable the Limit to one response per column option to ensure each item is ranked only once by each respondent.

8. Publish your form
When you’re ready, click Publish to make your ranked-choice voting survey available to your audience.

9. Preview before sharing
Click the eye icon to preview your poll and confirm everything looks correct before sharing the link.
