How to Merge Cells in Excel

This is an Arcade · Create your own

If you need to merge rows or columns in Excel in order to create clean, readable headers and group data by region or category, follow these steps for merging cells.

1. Select the cells you want to merge
Click and drag to highlight the cells — either across a row or down a column — that you'd like to combine. We'll use row merging in this example.

2. Click on Merge & Center
With the cells selected, go to the Home tab and click the Merge & Center button in the Alignment group.

3. Confirm the merge action
A pop-up will warn that only the upper-left cell's content will be preserved. Click OK to proceed.

4. Align content vertically
After merging, select the merged cell and click the Middle Align button (center vertical alignment) in the Alignment group to improve presentation.

5. Repeat as needed
Continue merging and aligning other cells in the same row or column group. You can merge cells both horizontally and vertically using these steps.
