How to Lock Cells in Excel

Want to prevent edits in your Excel worksheet? Here's how to lock cells in Excel using Format Cells and sheet protection to keep your data safe.

1. Select the cells you want to lock

Click and drag to highlight the specific cells you want to protect from editing in your Excel worksheet.‍

2. Open the Format Cells menu

Right-click the selected cells and choose Format Cells from the dropdown menu.

3. Lock the selected cells

Go to the Protection tab and check the box for Locked, then click OK.

4. Open the Protect Sheet menu

Go to the Review tab on the ribbon and click Protect Sheet.

5. Set your protection preferences

In the popup, choose what actions (like formatting or sorting) are still allowed, and set a password if desired.‍

6. Apply sheet protection

Click OK to activate protection. The locked cells can no longer be edited without removing protection.
